Seawalls
Seawalls in New Zealand are crucial coastal structures designed to protect the city’s shorelines from erosion, storm surges, and rising sea levels. Given Auckland’s extensive coastline and growing urban development near the water, these engineered barriers play a key role in safeguarding infrastructure, public spaces, and natural habitats. Stone seawalls stand the test of time when built well. They can be found in various forms throughout the country, balancing protection with environmental sustainability.

Auckland Council - Orewa Sea Wall
700m Seawall designed to protect the shoreline from erosion and storm damage. The project included excavation, foundation preparation, drainage, and installation of a structural rock wall using local basalt stone. The finished seawall provides long-term stability while blending with the coastal environment and meeting local council requirements.
Auckland Council - Stone Seating
Vea Contractors constructed basalt stone seating that also functions as a seawall, providing both public seating and coastal protection. The stone bleachers were carefully set on prepared foundations to ensure structural stability while withstanding tidal and weather conditions. The finished structure delivers a durable, visually striking feature that integrates practical coastal defence with high-quality stonemasonry.
